Hi everyone.

I have a used Philips Series 1 tivo hdr312 model purchased from Ebay(Not hacked in any way) . I went to set it up, and it works fine as under "Antenna" as source...

But when "Cable" is selected as a source after the first call out, the tivo "crashes" and reboots back to the initial setup again. when set to Antenna, it works fine, except it doesnt have all the channels it should.

Im using Comcast cable (without a cable box).

My tivo account is activated, ready to use, and in good standing. When I called Tivo I was told they only set up the account and would do nothing else at all, told me to call philips.

I have tried a factory reset with no results, as well as power cycling the tivo.
The coax is known to be good (tested with direct to tv connection, is fine...and the tivo works fine thinking it is on antenna with the same cable.)

Im suspicious of a software error on the tivo box, but unsure how to proceed to fix this.

can anyone help ?

Thanks

sean

If you're computer savvy, you can replace the hard drive yourself. You'll need to find an image of the TiVo software to put onto the hard drive. As a bonus, you'll add a bunch of storage for little cost. Head over to the "TiVo Upgrade Center" forum here for more information.

If you are not computer savvy enough, but can simply pop in a new drive as long as it has the proper image, then you can purchase such a drive at places like www.weaknees.com. Lastly, if have no faith in your ability to open up the TiVo and swap out the drive, you can ship your unit to weaknees.

You're right - it's a software error. Just set it up using antenna. Within a few days (faster, if you force call-ins) it will update to the latest 3.0 software, and then you can repeat Guided Setup selecting cable this time.

Well I wouldnt have a huge issue with upgrading, its just a pair of IDE drives as far as I know....

I was hoping for some built in partition for image restore or recovery on the machine or some other way to correct or upgrade the software....

I do know I see references all over to higher versions of the tivo software than the 1.2 im not sure if my tivo software should be updating or not...even when I set to antenna I still stay at a variant of 1.2....naturally not being at home I do not have the exact version number of 1.2.X but should I be higher ? Even with a 1st gen philips ?

Thanks for any help anyone can supply

AH, ok.... I was making the silly assumption that the tivo would update itself on the first call and be reasonable :>

If you force a normal call (not the guided setup call), it should cause the software update to be downloaded (if you're not already at the latest version). This will be a fairly long download. Once the download has completed, if you go to the system information screen it will say "Pending Restart..." if it indeed download an upgrade. At that point, reset your TiVo. Let the upgrade install (it can take around 30 minutes). Then, repeat guided setup.

This corrected the issue, the software updated to 3.0 and cable works fine.

Thanks for the help everyone!
