Is there any reason I shouldn't be able to reformat an R15 HD with instantcake (for a Series 2 Directivo) and drop it into my SD-DVR40? It's just a hard drive right?

I've had this POS R15 lying around for about a month and a half now. D* didn't charge me for it so it is not leased. I know I could send it back, but they would just send me another one. I was thinking I could at least upgrade my storage on one of my Tivos.

At least something good would come out of the R15 then (literally). ... as long as it doesn't infect my working dvr40 with some kind of anti-Tivo virus. ;)

As long as it's a IDE hard drive and not a SATA drive, it will work fine.

Yep, it will work. I did my DSR-704 up like that.

Can I take the HD from the R15-300 that DTV sent me and use it in my Hughes DVR40?

You will need to re-image the drive for the different equipment

Lots of info in the Undgerground forum on how to image a drive

Most if not all R15-300's are leased. Make sure you don't have to return the unit to DirecTV before you pull the drive out of it.
