yeah i have both series 2 tivo's and the HR20 dvr from directv, PAIN IN THE ASS to fast forward.
I just do the 30 sec slips and 8 sec back once i go by it.
tivo it takes me like 2-3 sec to get through a commercial, with this it's EASY 20 sec even if it's perfect.
oh well, HD is worth it :)

Patented by TiVo so they could not implement it...Did TiVo patent the concept of overshoot compensation? Or just the implementation?
I ask, because Sony has had overshoot compensation on their VCRs since the late 1990's ...
I don't see why DirecTV can't provide a similar feature using a different implementation than what TiVo has patented.

I believe TiVo patented the process in a hard drive based DVR, which would be different than on a VCR.
I'm sure DirecTV (and every other DVR manufacturer out there) tried to find a way around it,
and couldn't find any way of doing it that didn't violate the patent.
(just ask DishNetwork how that plays out)

phoxThanks, that's too bad. I wonder if any other set-top-box makers have approached TiVo about a licensing fee to incorporate overshoot compensation into their boxes. If they did, TiVo either declined to license it (which would keep this feature unique to the TiVo DVR) or TiVo's asking price was too high ...
Moer likely no one asked TiVo, but it seems like a sure-fire way for TiVo to get their foot in the door with the STB makers and to make some extra pocket money!

Of course, I'm just basing that on what I've read here and other forums.
I am in no way an expert on TiVo's patents.

And Sony licensed Tivo's patent when Sony released the DHG DVR models.

so i see my bill has a large charge on it, $149 for equipment..
i call and they tell me i haven't returned my dvr...
which i explain to them is because the unit is one that i purchased outside of directv...
after 3 different people tell me i need to return it since they didn't charge me for the one they sent, except for the 20 in s/h, i tell them i will return the pos unit they sent me and go buy a tivo version...
so now, where are the best deals on a tivo version...tia
