View Full Version : OTA signal strength zero?

I've got an HR10-250 I'm attempting to set up. I've got one of those 'flying saucer' omnidirectional antennas. On my Pioneer 1140HD plasma I'm getting around 65/100 for signal strength. Same thing goes for a Hauppauge HVR-950 USB tuner. But when I unplug a working cable from the TV or the USB tuner and plug it into the HR10-250 I get no signal strength being shown in the setup. This after doing a from-scratch setup using the OTA-only configuration. When I manually tune to channels I get nothing. I've tried connecting directly to the tuner tin cans and that makes no difference.

So is there something else necessary to get OTA working on the HR10-250?

I assume that you reran the setup to say that you were using OTA? That should be all that is needed. You are comparing with digital channels on the other devices, right?

Yep, OTA for ATSC HD channels. Ones that I can tune in properly on an HD television and a USB tuner, using that very same cable (pop it off one and onto the HR10). Nada for signal strength on the HR10.

I've just set the unit to do a total reset, I'll report back if that has any impact on OTA reception.

65 is a pretty marginal signal, and I haven't found the tuners in the hr10 to be that great. My tv's internal tuner always shows a much higher signal strength, and doesn't seem to be bothered by multipath as much.

If your reset doesn't fix anything, you might also check that you don't have loose connections on the internal rg59 cables. See the thread of "fixing ota ..." that's at the top of the list today. The rg59/rg6 thing is a red herring, but it has a good description of what to tighten where.

Failing that, try a different antenna maybe? I always had better luck with rabbit ears than those disc things.

The internal cables were tight, but connecting directly to one of them didn't make a difference.

But once it completed the clear and delete it now sees some OTA channels. They're only reading a signal strength of 65 on the settings test screen. I'll have to experiment a bit to see what I can do to improve the signals. Especially since the whole reason I've put the effort into OTA was to pickup the ABC affiliate for the upcoming new episode of Lost.

I don't have that channel yet, but at least the it's picking up OTA.

An omni antenna is probably the worst choice for OTA ATSC reception. Begin at antennaweb.org. for stations and pointing info, but disregard their recommendations for antennae, which are too broad to properly target ATSC for most locations. Then visit hdtvprimer.com for antenna advice. Then come back here.
