I'm a newbie to some of this so I'm looking for an answer. I just got a new Sony HDTV. I have been told that the HDMI input would give me the best picture quality. I also have a Directv HR10-250 Tivo box that I would like to hook up to it. I put the HDMI cable from the HR10 into the HDMI outlet on the back of hte TV but no picture comes up. Should it?

I then hooked up the component cables and it does work that way. Do I need both hooked up and the HDMI enhances the picture or should the HDMI alone do the trick?

It's an either/or.

I had mine hooked up via HDMI in the beginning, then I switched to component when I got the Series 3.

I couldn't tell a difference.

If you have an early release of the HR10-250, you could have a bad HDMI card.

After years of TV viewing with my Mits. 65 TV that worked w/my Sony Receiver and HD10-250 using component cables I decided to upgrade my TV and receiver. I just got the Sony 70 KDSR70-XBR2 and Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi. I get no picture when I use my HDMI hookup to the TV directly or through the receiver. I know the receiver isn't a problem as it has no problem displaying my ps3 or dvd player through hdmi. Too get any picture at all - I had to connect my component cables to new Sony.

Any ideas why I am not getting any pic through my HDMI out from my HD10-250? I have tried almost every video setting - used the cable that works for my dvd player too so no cable issue.

Any help appreciated.

The early versions of the HR10-250 has a lot of HDMI failures.

There's even a company that will fix it for you:
HR10-250 repair (http://www.ccscorporation.net/)

Thanks David0 - I will look into the company as D-TV told me after 3 tech support people that it is a known issue and they are expecting a software download to fix it. Too bad they have no idea when the software download will be.

So - now back to component cables for the near future as I can't send my box out w/the big game this Sunday.

The real HDMI problems won't be fixed by software. Best to just stick with component -- as others have mentioned, there's no difference in PQ.

I myself had to switch to component because when I use HDMI and enable Dolby Digital output, I get bad audio stuttering. Switching to component fixed the problem.

To fix this I ran HDMI to the input of my pioneer elite 74-txvi, but than I also ran the optical audio out to the pioneer. Than I just matched the inputs through the setup menu on the pioneer. Many of todays receivers can mix and match audio/video inputs to whatever you choose.

I have no problems getting DD audio while using HDMI.

I didn't used to have a problem either -- it just started up at one point and wouldn't go away. It's not an issue of what the receiver will accept -- my HR10-250 seems to have some kind of weird load problem.

Funny, I said "to fix this." I never had a problem to start with. I just remember reading in here people saying they couldnt get 5.1 out of hdmi, so when I got mine, I just ran the optical cable. Never even tried getting th eaudio out of the HDMI.

Neither have I. I have only ever used Toslink. Even so, if I use HDMI->My TV (and Toslink->My Receiver), DD output stutters badly (to the point where you basically can't understand what is being said). Switching to Component->TV eliminated the problem.

Like I said, I think it's some weird kind of load issue, though nothing really telling appeared in the logs and top didn't show a runaway process or anything.
