A few months ago, someone posted a thread that had links that showed how you could "copy" shows from one receiver to another.
Basically, I have a dying Series 2 SD-DVR40: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=337535
From what I can recall, the steps I needed to do were:
1) Get a new HD with InstantCake for SD-DVR40 baked onto it.
2) Install new HD into the SD-DVR40 receiver. Clear and delete everything.
3) Take new HD out and put it, along with the old HDs of the DTV receiver into a Linux box.
4) There was some SW (Linux-based??) that allowed me to copy the saved shows from the old HDs into the new one.
5) Re-install HD back into the SD-DVR40.
Now, that would be fine except I'd rather replace the old SD-DVR40 and get another (used) one. The RCA jacks (both of them) on the SD-DVR40 are broken (I bought it used and didn't check the RCA jacks immediately). So I prefer just replacing the whole receiver but also copying the shows to a new HD in a new receiver.
IIRC, the steps were:
1) Get a new HD with InstantCake for SD-DVR40 baked onto it.
2) Install a SW that allows you to network (TurboNet)
3) Install new HD into the SD-DVR40 receiver. Clear and delete everything.
4) Take new HD out and put it, along with the old HDs of the DTV receiver into a Linux box.
5) There was some SW (Linux-based??) that allowed me to copy the saved shows from the old HDs into the new one.
6) Install new HD (that now has the shows copied) into the old SD-DVR40.
7) Get the new HD from the 2nd (new) DTV receiver. Bake InstantCake on it.
8) Install a SW that allows you to network (TurboNet). Clear and delete everything. Activate receiver with DirecTV.
9) Network between the old receiver and the new one via the USB port.
10) The TurboNet SW allows you to "copy" shows from one receiver to another.
There was a thread on this. I've tried searching for it but I can't find it. I had the thread bookmarked. Unfortunately, the HD on my PC died and I had to replace it. I lost all my bookmarks :(
HD failures have caused me a lot of grief in the last few months....
