I've had an Hughes SD-DVR80 for several years, and absolutely loved it. I had recently bought a nice beautiful 42" plasma, and plugged it into the wrong outlet on my battery backup unit. When I powered the TV and A/V unit at the same time, the UPS failed, and it screwed up my D*Tivo receiver.

Instead of getting it repaired (no telling how much I would have spent only to have it probably not work) I decided to switch to Cox and get an S3. For that horror story, you'll have to go to the S3/Cox threads.

The D*Tivo powers on, and displays "Welcome. Powering up..." on a grey background, and thats where it sits. Anyone have any idea of what I could do with it?

Try a new HDD in it. Or sell it as-is, explaining the state.

More than likely, it is a hard drive problem. Replacing the hard drive will probably resolve the problem. But if it doesn't, it's not really cost effective to repair the out of warranty receivers. Your choices then become sourcing another one off Ebay or settling for one of the inferior d** models e.g. the R15.

See if Directv will send you a new or refurbished R10. You can't hack it, but you could put in a bigger hard drive and it's still a Tivo. Or you could spend $20 for instantcake and put in another hard drive in your hughes unit. (use an old hard drive if you have one first, to make sure thats the problem).

250 GB Hard Drive = $100
InstantCake = $20

253 hr D*TiVo back up and running!!!
