View Full Version : Sound but no video on R10

Last night my wife called me into the front room to tell me the TV was not working properly. When I got there I found that the TV had sound but no video. All of the other functions on the R10 were working. I could view the guide, see what channel I was watching. I could see my "now playing" list and the "Directv" button at the top of the remote brought up that guide. Finally I pressed the "standby" button a couple of times and that restored the video.

Anyone know what may have caused this to happen?

A couple things to check ....

* Make sure cables between R10 and your TV are solidly connected
* Check your R10's internal temperature ("Messages & Setup" -> "System Information"). If it's over 50-deg then it might be overheating.

I've heard of people losing video when using a s-video cable. Try unplugging it and use a coax cable or composite to see if that works. Good luck. :)

Actually this was happening with a coax cable

RCA dvr80 - about 2 weeks ago the signal to the TV via coax stopped working

Removed coax and put in rca cable... all works fine

Seems the one circuit that put the signal out to the coax decided to quit

I just now started to have this problem, with a slight variance. I have sound, and a frozen screen, and the R10 is slow to respond to commands. I can go into my now playing list and watch something there, but live tv, is a frozen screen, currently something from my now playing list. Before I went into a recorded program the frozen screen was something from live tv.

I have a drive that I installed via instacake only 3-4 months ago.

This is most likely a dying hard drive.

Is this a reply to me, the OP, or both?

jangell2, I think the "failing hard drive" was a response to your posted symptoms.

All: Re-read the original post; "no video" wasn't an accurate title, it should have been "no programming seen, but programming audio OK". It's not a video cable issue since the Tivo menus can be seen on the screen.

If the sat dish had been disconnected there should have been a message about that on the screen.

Very strange behavior - I have no explanation.

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of days after I moved. I have an R10 in my bedroom and another R10 in the Living room. It happened to the one in the bedroom first. Then it happened to the one in the living room a couple of days later. Rebooting fixed the problem both times and it has not happened since. This is the first time I have had to have a multiswith (other than the one built into the dish). Could it be the multiswitch?

How long has it been since you moved? I sure hope it isn't my hard drive, since it's less than 6 months old and its got a piss-pot full of programs on it.

I just thought of something I didn't mention before. Less than a week ago, I had shutdown my tivo, unplugged it, and put in a new ups. Than powered it up with no problem. Could that have caused this?

This is a strange thing that I have seen twice. The first time it was on my HR10-250 recording a Formula 1 race on Speed. I was watching the recorded video and all of a sudden the picture froze, the sound continued, then the screen went black. Here's the funny thing: I just let it run for a little while thinking they lost the video on the feed, but gave up and fast forwarded it. As soon as I fast forwarded it, both picture and sound came back. I rewound it back a little bit and things were OK. I thought dang - the hard drive is failng. Then I remembered I had recorded the same program on my Samsung 4080 and checked it. Same thing. Now I'm thinking "ah hah! D* is doing something to the signal to screw up the Tivos." Then I go to the R-15 I have in another room where the race is also recorded (OK I'm an F1 junkie ...) and the same thing on the R-15. So, my guess is somehow at random, the signal got corrupted and the mpeg decoders couldn't handle it in both DTiVOs and R-15s. I re-recorded the race when they rebroadcast it the next day and everything was OK.

The same thing happened again on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It was recorded earlier this week, and I just happened to watch it today. This was during the JayWalking segment. Same exact symptom.

I haven't noticed this any other time. But if the symptoms you're seeing on your machine are the same as these, don't go rushing out to replace your hard drive. It's probably not your hard drive.

I hope this helps.

Have any of the symptoms for anyone in this thread included the DVR being slow to respond to remote commands? That was also happening to me.

I have an R10 that I don't use all that often. I turned it on and there was no sound. I pulled the plug and rebooted to get the sound back. It's now working fine.

So did you figure anything out?

I've got this same issue. I think it's the hard drive but I have no proof of it. Has anyone installed a new hard drive in a R10 and see the problem go away?

There's no reason for a failing hard drive to cause loss of video with no audio problems. Something else is wrong. Perhaps you can post back with more details about your exact symptoms and what you've tried so far.

My exact symptoms:
Video with "pixelize" about every 5 mins. Then every evening that video will go out but all you'll hear is the audio. This second symptom also keeps shows from recording since the video signal is gone. To get things back I have to reboot the machine.

The "pixelization" is what's leading me to a bad hard drive. Plus, even when the picture is out (but with audio) the signal strength is still in the 90's on both sats when I test the signal strength.

What I've tried so far? Nothing. I've got to decide what to do pretty quick if D* will not active used equipment after 3/1. I'm hoping it is the drive so I can just buy a new one. If it's not the drive then I guess I'll look at buying a HDVR2 somewhere.

I just found this post over on the Weaknees forum (http://www.********.com/forums/showthread.php?t=402) and a guy replaced the hard drive and still has the issue.

So, I guess I need to find a new DTivo...
