View Full Version : I Think I Killed It

Hey gang. I think I killed my TiVo. I was adding a preconfigured 80 Gig drive from DVR Upgrade to my 80 Gig TiVo, using the Weaknees twinbreeze kit. I had everything in and cranked it up and the capacity was still at 80 hours. I thought I may have set the jumper wrong on the B drive. So, I opened it back up and moved the jumper on the B drive. In playing with it I believe I set both drives as Master. When I powered up I got the "Power Up" screen, then it went to a gray screen.

I fiddled some more and am pretty sure I have the jumpers set right, but I can't get past the "Power Up" screen. It comes up to the "Power Up" screen for a while, then flickers to black and then returns to the "Power Up" screen. It just cycles like that.

I left it unplugged over night and tried it again this morning, same results. I'm not sure if I killed the hard drives when they were both set to Master or if something else happened.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Depending on the drive model there may be a "Master with slave" position and "Master single drive".

I try booting your DVR with just the original drive and jumper position.

Then carefully move the jumper to "Master dual drive" and add the second drive with Jumper set Slave.

Do you have access to a PC?

Thanks for your reply.

The original drive is a Maxtor Diamond 16 and the added drive is a Samsung SP0802N.

I do have access to a PC.

It seems unlikely that you could have killed the hard drives with incorrect jumper settings; usually that just causes them not to be recognized. Have you double checked the seating of every cable? Sometimes unplugging all the power and IDE cables and plugging them back in will take care of it. All of my "OMG I killed my TiVo!" upgrade scares have turned out to be due either to bad jumper settings or an incompletely seated cable. I would unhook everything, try HomeUser's suggestion and see if it boots, then if so try the dual drive setup again.

On the less optimistic side, you can kill your TiVo if you dislodge the white front panel ribbon cable. I don't know what the symptoms of that are, but you could search the forum and see.

Diamond max jumper J50 for both Master single drive and Master dual drive.

Samsung The jumpers should be horizontal.

If the Diamond Max had been upgraded before you need to put the drives in the PC boot the Linux MFSTools CD and marry the drives with mfsadd.

Thanks HomeUser and coldtoes for the help.

The Diamond Max hasn't been upgraded, its the original drive.

I'll run through your suggestions tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Hey gang, I ran through the options and had no luck. I have another TiVo (40 hour) so I opened it up and played drive swap. The 40 gig drive worked in either box. The original 80 gig drive and the additional 80 gig drive didn't work in either. The additional drive is still under warranty, so I can send it back to have it checked out.

Thanks for your help. If you have any other ideas let me know.
