Anyone have any suggestions for getting the daily dial in to work over the Earthlink VOIP service (I think its actually over Covad infrastructure)?

I've tried most (if not all) of the Vonage suggestions (2122773895 number, baud rate to #034 or #019, etc.)

The units I have are a Phillips DSR708 and a Hughes HR10-250.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe get external modems that do work with VOIP?

I don't use VOIP so I'm just taking a wild stab in the dark.

Why plug it in at all?

Like Todd said, why bother? The calls are completely unnecessary anyway.

The only real advantage for dialing in is to get software updates. Might be important for the HR10 which has had 3 upgrades recently and probably more to come.

What problems are you seeing when dialing in with VOIP?

You mentioned DSL in the thread title, so do you have a DSL filter on the line? However, I don't know how that works with VOIP.

When it dials the New York number, one of three things happens:

1) It dials and doesn't answer
2) It answers but doesn't connect
3) It connects but doesn't negotiate

All of these scenarios seem to be random, but I would say that #1 and #3 are more common than #2. I screwed with it for about 4 hours yesterday. I WILL tell you, however, that I was trying it on the Phillips box only (haven't tried the HR10-250 yet).

As for a DSL filter, I have tried it with and without. I have also tried the "backwards" trick with the filter. I had the DSL technician set up a stand alone DSL connection, however, so I don't think a filter should be required (the phone lines shouldn't have a DSL signal coming through them the way the technician wired it.)

The reason I want to connect is for the software updates primarily. I don't really Pay Per View, so that's not an issue. Secondarily is to get rid of the stupid reminder messages. The tertiary reason is because I think I have OCD, and now its a challenge!

Software updates are downloaded from the satellite. A phone call is only needed for the authorization to activate it.

Have you reviewed that various other threads concerning VOIP?

I have AT&T VOIP coming in a couple of days.
I don't need to connect but I need it to work with Elseed.

I believe I have reviewed the various other threads concerning VOIP, but perhaps I missed a few. Can you point me to a specific thread you might be referring to?

Search for the PPP over Serial thread if you want an alternative way of connecting. I used it for years.
