Our lives are so busy right now we decided to ditch DirecTV - we don't watch enough TV to justify the $. Now we have the DirecTV reciever with built in TiVo. Can we still use it as a DVR? I don't even want to pay for the TiVo Service...Just want to be able to push record (or rewind for that matter) whenever there's something on I want to watch but DS is demanding all of my attention ;)

Thanks!

All you can do is watch recordings stored on it.

It can not encode the signals, so it can not record them. DirecTV sends the signals preencoded.

Sorry about that.

I belive that you can watch programs which were recorded before you canceled DirectTV.

What model?

I hate my R15 (and so does my wife).

The remote is so darned unresponsive.

eBay has a very active market for DirecTv Tivo boxes... go take a look, and list yours if you really want to sell

I don't know for sure. We bought it at best buy...I'll have to look when I get home.

That model can bring a pretty good penny as it is highly hackable.

I'll attest to that.

Hi, I just wanted to follow up on this thread.

I have a friend who has a directivo (sorry, I don't know the specific brand, but I do know it's Tivo) who is cancelling his service. I have no interest in DirecTV, but he has a couple of TV series stored on the DVR. I'd like to buy it just to watch the shows he has recorded on it. Once I watch them, I'd just sell the unit to someone else. I tried unplugging the satalite feed and it worked fine to watch the DVR recording. But when I pulled out the card, an annoying message stayed on the screen asking to re-insert the card.

I'd like to buy it off him, but I'm afraid once he cancels his service, somehow something won't work or I'll have an annoying message. Does anyone have any insight as to whether or not I can watch the shows stored on the the Tivo without any annoying messages once the service is disconnected?

Thanks for any help.

As long as you leave the card in it, it will work to watch all the programs recorded on the hard drive.
