Pure speculation, but worth discussion:
TiVo Gone by 2010 (http://www.betanews.com/article/Yankee_Group_TiVo_No_More_By_2010/1169481622)

With the loss of DirecTV as a partner...and who is a partner in DirecTV?
Murdoch.

Pundits write this kind of rubbish all the time. They predicted the end of Apple for years, and this isn't the first time they've predicted the end of Tivo.
Maybe in the US their DVR's do have Tivo features, giving them real competition, but I'm not so sure given some of the comments on the article (glorified VCR indeed... pah.).

The guy is talking about standalone boxes in the US and basing his argument on the assumption that's all that TiVo will ever produce.
However, as this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=336163) discusses, TiVo have recently re-engineered their software to run on any manufacturer's hardware - maybe even including NDS (aka Sky+) - clearly pointing to their intention to expand to a wide base of cable and other DVR providers by offering a software-only service whereby real TiVo software can be downloaded over the air to the box for an extra fee.
Given the fact that "to TiVo" is now a de-facto verb in American English, this has got to be a good thing as it means any cableco will be able to offer "TiVo" functionality on their previously bogus DVR and mean it

Tony:
The reason I posted this speculative article is that I've been wondering where TiVo go now. Sure, there are USPs for the TiVo, but others are catching up.
To use your example, Apple was (arguably) first in the GUI desktop when compared to Windows. But MS came along and in PC terms, Macs a niche market. iPods are what saved Apple, not Macs.
