You can, of course, copy them in real time to DVD or VHS.

Why should you send in your old unit? You paid for it didnt you? Who told you this?

Call back, i find it *real* hard to beleave they want your tivo. How long has it been on your account and where did you get it from? I assume your account has it listed as "Leased" hence why they want you to return it.

Check that out.
When I activated a DSR704 I bought from Weaknees last week, they put it on my account as a Leased Receiver. I called them today and had them change it to an Additional Receiver (customer owned).
There was no problem, but I'm sure the closer to the actual activation date the better.

hmmm...they basically said since they "gave" me the new receiver i would have to send in my other one..
i will call and explain things better...
also, i am really hating the new one...almost to the point of sending it back and buying a shell from weakness...
like the need to include "the" when searching is really dumb...
how hard would it be to take th old harddrive and put into a new shell...i do not want to have to hook it up to the computer and that kind of stuff...

You'll have to reimage the drive. Or you can buy a preimaged one from this forum's store or weaknees.com or ptvupgrades.com.

If its a Series 2 DTiVo then do the Zipper on it. After you do that, you can get to the recordings, move them to your pc, etc...
The new Directv DVR (R15) can't do anything with them, but at least you would have them on your PC and can burn them to DVD or whatever.
Check out: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4820169&&#post4820169 for a post about this (if this is of interest). Search the forum for Zipper if you want to enable the ability
