I bought a Tivo Series 2, Dual Tuner about 6 months ago when I had Charter cable. I finally gave up on Charter because they dropped my local channels on one of my tvs with digital cable.
I went to Direct TV, got a Direct TV DVR, and decided to also use the Tivo I had prepaid for 3 years of service on. I figured I would just get 2 receivers for my living room and be able to record 4 shows between the 2 DVRs. It wasn't quite that easy...

Anyway, I think I got it. It's pretty hinky, but it looks like it is working.

I hooked one receiver up like normal, with the IR receivers and blocked it so that nothing else could control it.

I hooked the other reciever into an RF converter - like for video games, and put that into my cable in connection on the Tivo, setting everything to channel 3.

I did guided setup and said I had cable and direct tv. Then I got rid of all my calbe channels except for channel 3.

To record off my seoncd tuner, I set manual record on channel 3 for the approporiate time, and autotune with the second Direct TV receiver to the appropriate channel.

Seems to be working, but the shows have the wrong name. I can live with this, but...

Is there a better way?

Thanks,
Elli

Nope. The DT is not designed for satellite boxes, and it will not control 2 boxes. Manual recordings will show the time recorded, not the show title.

I am suprised you got things working as well as you did. Good work!

Thanks. It took a few (6 or so) hours to figure it out. But I saw that you could record from a DVD player, so I just decided to make my second receiver "look" like a DVD player. I had the RF converter sitting around anyway, so all it cost me was time, but I'm more familiar with how both my Direct TV and my Tivo work.

My next goal it to figure out if I can get at the filename inside the file after I transfer it to my laptop. Then I could rename, and transfer back and forth if I want to keep it more than a few days. It's gotta be in there somewhere...and I'm a computer programmer, so I gotta have some kind of a chance, right?
