I followed the instructions on this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=297071) , but I still can't have the remote turn off my A/V receiver AND my TV. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Not in the thread you linked to.

If you taught any commands to the S3 remote, then those commands would supercede of of the preset commands. Try resetting the remote and try the steps again.

How do I program my remote to control a TV/stereo (http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=08962758-a6ac-4a42-917b-8d6c4301b969)

I'll try that, thanks. How do I reset the remote?

I tried this exact sequence after resetting, but to no avail. Still only turns off the TV (and the A/V volume works). :(

Learning Remote

The TiVo® Series3TM Digital Media Recorder remote is a “learning remote.” This means that it can learn certain functions from other remotes. If you were unable to find a code that works, try this method:

1. Press the TiVo button and SELECT buttons simultaneously, and hold them for 3 seconds, until the red activity light remains lit. The remote is now in “learning mode.”

2. On the TiVo remote, press and release the button you want it to learn (e.g., TV PWR). The activity light will flash once to acknowledge the button press, then remain lit.

3. Point the remotes directly at each other, no more than 4 inches apart.

4. Press the corresponding button on the TV or A/V receiver remote (e.g., Power). If learning is successful, the activity light will flash 4 times. If it is not successful, it will blink 10 times very quickly.

5. Repeat steps 2-5 for any additional buttons. NOTE: In learning mode, VOL UP and VOL DOWN are separate buttons.

6. When done, press the TiVo button to exit learning mode and return the remote to normal operation.

Thanks everyone for the help so far. I'm still not having any luck controlling the AV reciever and TV power at the same time. When I follow TiVo's instructions, I am unable to control the AV power, but can control the TV power and AV volume. I tried teaching the remote the command for AV power toggle, but then the remote forgets the code for the TV power. It seems they cannot coexist (ie, once I program/teach one code, the other is forgotten).
Tivo tech support is useless (a "level 2 tech" told me that it's not guaranteed that the Tivo remote can do this). Please help! I hate having a second remote just for the stupid AV's power!

This may seem like a weird question, but if the AVR is on, and you un plug it from the wall, does it come back on when you plug it in?

The reason I ask, is that you can get a deivce that you plug into the wall power, and then you put your TV on one 'special' outlet, and the AVR on another. When the device senses that the power is flowing through the 'special' outlet, it turns the outlet(s) on. When power drops on the special outlet, it turns the other(s) off.

This might let you do what you want.

Otherwise you could get a logitech Harmony remote, that can definitely do this. My 880 does this now.

There was supposed to be a knowledge article (http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=be9bd3fe-3be0-4636-88a3-c5d730e58855) posted a month ago with language to this effect, but it looks like it got caught up in the system. This thread prompted me to find it and shake it loose. It is now visible. :D

Now you can see the difference between how I'd write it and how it looks when one of our writers cleans up the instructions.

I taught my S3 to power off my A/V receiver when I press the Mute button. I didn't even realize you could program the TV Power button to do double duty.

I think I prefer my two button press solution. That way you never have to worry about getting in that outta sync state.

Hmm, if that trick isn't patented do you mind if I use it?? :D
