View Full Version : TIVO + Panasonic Plasma = Problems :(

I have a Panasonic Plasma (TH42PWD8) with scart and component input boards installed - bought 2nd hand today.

TIVO box is not playing ball with the Plasma though - every few minutes or so I get a sort of flash -like the mode 0 one but its across the whole screen, almost like a loss of sync.

I've tried RGB, non-RGB, scart control on/off, changing from Mode 0 to Mode 4 - all to no avail.

Yet it worked fine with my old CRT TV

and Plasma works perfectly connected with same scart straight to the Telewest box.

Any ideas please ? I presume the TIVO box is outputting something it doesn't like ... but what ?

thanks, Mark.

I'm afraid that I don't know what is happening with your PWD8, but I've been using my PWD6 with my Tivo for two years now with no problems. First I used it via scart and then decided to try to improve the picture and go via an RGB to VGA converter as the PWD6 scart board is notorious for picture quality that it not at it's best. I've got Mode 0 applied and get the normal small flashes across the bottom of the screen, but nothing like you describe.

A scart to VGA converter is an option for you to try, but it's expensive if it doesn't olve anything.

Sounds like the teletext bug.

Unlikely. Panasonic kit, AFAIK, does not suffer from this.

Also, as this is a panel-only plasma with no TV tuner, I would hazard a guess that it doesn't have a teletext chip either... ;)

I do vaguely remember reading something about low sync voltages causing problems like this in the past, athough I can't remember whether it was in relation to either this (or similar) panels or TiVos. Still, FWIW...

thanks guys - yes panel only - so probably no teletext bug ...

I was thinking possibility I needed to take out the scart board and reseat - but I noticed it got worse/better if I moved the scart around at the back of the TIVO box. Its quite a decent on - a Philex Thor .. but I thought - lets take the cable out of the equation and try the one that came with the TIVO box ....

well it hasn't lost sync yet - 2 hours on - so fingers crossed.

what was interesting was I couldn't get RGB to work properly with the "decent scart" to the Plasma, BUT now it seems fine - how bizarre.

fingers crossed :)

Got the same panel and have never seen this. Connected via an IXOS scart over RGB if that helps.

I have seen issues of loss of sync on Panasonic panels with PC's driving via both VGA and SCART connectors. Other makes of panels Pioneer, LG no issue. Even pulled apart leads so we could scope the various sync signals.

Issue was due to crosstalk/interference on the sync signals and was cured by buying expensive Lindy leads and/or addition of ferrites to the leads. Even breaking apart a lead and putting ferrites around the sync signals.

Does it do the same if using the Aux bypass?

I've my Tivo connected to my series 5 Panny via an SCART -> component convertor and that displays a similar problem of loss of signal on some recordings. Not too much of a problem as I use my MCE machine for 99% of recordings now.

I've a spare Syncblaster RGB SCART -> VGA converter sitting at home doing nothing if you wanted to try it out.
