My brother's 540040's drive died (pulled it out and checked it). He had no backup of the software. Does this mean that he needs to buy one of the pre-built drives from somewhere, or is there software available that can rebuild a blank new drive?

That drive is for a Humax, and would work just fine if the OP had a Humax, but he/she has a Series2 540 TiVo... :rolleyes:

But a 540 image can be put on the drive for an extra $5, read the post.
