A few months ago I hacked an S1 with a 160GB HD. It worked OK for a couple of weeks then said it couldn't boot the kernel. So I figured the new HD was bad. So I put in another (120GB) HD and it worked for about a week but now doesn't get past the "Powering Up" screen. I tried reseating everything and checked the power supply voltages and had both +5v and +12v. I even pulled the MB completely out and reinstalled it. It gives the same symptoms with the original 30GB drive too.

Anything else I should try before declaring it toast?

Have you tried using a fresh image from somewhere rather than your backup?

No, those are the only two drives I have access to at the moment.

I also forgot to mention that the HD does some clicking after a few minutes like the heads are hitting the stops. It does it with both drives.

It sure sounds like drive failures.

Next time you are over this direction, I'm sure I have a good drive for you to try.
