Back for a fifth season. New co-host, new judges.
I wish that USA Network/ producers of the show would give us a show or two that tells us all more about how they pick the people that are on the opening show of the season.
That's one complaint. A second would be why/how do they determine that they have to have 5 women and 5 men? Why not 6/4, or 7/3 with the best being the best. Why include a set number on either side at the possible exclusion of better singers on the other side?
Eliminating 1 of each of the sides at the beginning of the season seems stupid too. I liked earlier seasons (such as season 2) better where they gave an opportunity to the audience to put back someone that otherwise had been eliminated.
The singing tonite by both men and women has been spotty at best. The Devil went down one singers throat, apparently while he was on the way to Georgia. Guitar playing was his best talent for sure. Singing was bleh.
One woman was called out (I believe by judge Anastasia Brown) over her "pitchy" (I think it was said as her pitch was all over the place) performance. Well deserved comment. Certainly not the best performance.
The voices so far have been ok at best, a lot of copies of more famous artists. Not so much originality.
Finally, back to the new co-host. Thanks USA Network for giving the job to Jewel. She's a vast improvement over Wynona who had it last season. Thanks also for keeping Cowboy Troy. He did a fine job last season, but Wynona lacked energy and apparent effort. She seemed to just want to sleep through the job and never seemed to show real emotion at all. She showed all the emotional range of a turtle that was walking across a road. Jewel, on the other hand, is more naturally perky. When she expressed concern over contestants that were eliminated she really seemed to be caring. I guess a bit reminiscent of Sara Evans when she did the job in earlier seasons.
I hope the performances get better throughout the season. If not, I'll probably lose interest quickly this season as I have too many other things to do with my time.
