DirecTV is only switching there high definition feeds over to mpeg-4 currently. The HR10-250 will still be able to receive the standard definition feeds and ATSC OTA broadcast for the foreseeable future. It is doubtful if DirecTV will change the standard definition feeds over to mpeg-4 anytime soon as it would require replacing millions of standard definition receivers they currently have in the field.

$299 for a new unit! Great price!
I just bought a used unit on eBay for more than that. :(
I decided to do that to "dip my toe" into HD. There is so much flux in the cable/Sat world right now, I wanted to stick with the familiar DirecTivo for a while.
I'm hoping that the it will continue to work as an SD and OTA receiver for a very long time. I'm hoping the existing MPEG2 channels stick around at least a year.
If DirecTV doesn't come to their senses and make Nice with TiVo again, I expect I'll be heading to Comcast and either get an S3 or a Comcast DVR with TiVo.
