Just announced here in Minnesota, Comcast will now offer a cable box that runs TiVo DVR software at an additional cost. Does anyone have experience to know if the TiVo receiver will still operate on it's own or do I have to revert to renting the Comcast cable box receiver?

Don't know. You wouldn't be paying Tivo you would pay Comcast the Tivo fee.

Tivo boxes don't work well when connected to another DVR. There's a conflict of which box is really in charge (in this case the cable DVR would win). You can have the two boxes working side-by-side to the same tv (using an A/V receiver), although the Tivo wouldn't be getting the digital channels.

The cost is up to Comcast, not Tivo. You'd have to ask them. From what I've heard today, the comcast Tivo DVR doesn't have networking capability, so you couldn't use MRV, TTG, TTCB, play music from your computer, TivoCast, all the HME apps in Music, etc folder.

Is that a real "now" or a future-tense "now"

To the OP - you are reading a story written from an original AP story that was later corrected.

"now" really isn't as soon as you think.

When the service is available you can keep your current Tivo with your current cable box and continue to pay TiVo what you're paying them now. Or you can you do away with your current Tivo completely, replace it with a Comcast DVR running TiVo software, pay Tivo nothing and pay a fee to Comcast instead. Pricing for the service hasn't been announced.
