Hello, I have a Toshiba Series 2 SD-400 unit with Tivo Basic service (it came with free lifetime basic service). It is connected to the world via a plugged in USB 802.11b card. Anyway, when I go to look at my MAK number, it says 'Temporarily Not Available'. What does it mean and how can I make it available?
Another issue is that I read that at some point in 2005, a software update enabled a web server on the TiVOs. I've tried going to my TiVO's web server via https://<tivo ip address>, but it seems like the web service is not there.
What am I missing here?

You need to subscribe to the Plus service to get a MAK, and enable that web interface.

I really don't want to pay for the service (already have a ton of monthly bills), since the Basic service does exactly what I want.
Is there no way to get the recordings off the TiVo Basic? Hacks or otherwise?

No. Even if you hack the box it only allows extraction of recordings recorded after the hack was installed.

Ok, that's fine. Is there a link to the hack somewhere?

Some might consider that hack theft of service, since it involves a paid feature on a standalone.
What is okay is something that records A/V from the TiVo to your PC or whatever.

Nope, I bought the TiVO, thus the contents of TiVO's hard drive are mine alone. Consequently what I choose to place on that hard drive is my business.

That has nothing to do with the 'theft of service' concept.
