I was helping a friend out with setting up their Tivos for broadband access. There Humax accepted the wireless adaptor and was able to connect to the Tivo service. Their other Tivo (older series 2) accepted the wireless adaptor and did connect to the Tivo service. I noticed that there where some issues with this Tivo. When the Tivo button was pushed it said that the tivo service was not active, but in the account info it said account in good standing. The bill for this tivo was up to date (other Tivo has life time on it). So I decided to restart the Tivo by going to the restart section, just the reboot not the clear everything. When I did that I heard a noise from the Tivo, hard drive possibly, then the screen came up and just said please wait powering up. It never went pass that screen. According to Tivo they are saying it is either a bad power supply or hard drive. So I opened up the tivo and looked the power supply and hard drive. Both looked ok. I used mfstools and it was able to see the original Tivo drive. If mfstools can see the drive is the drive good? If the drive is unbootable can I back all the info, mostly the recordings, to a newer larger drive?

Any tips or info would be very helpful.

Test the drive with the downloadable manufacturer's drive test utility. That's the only way to know for sure whether drive is ok or not unless it is totally dead and will not even spin up.

Update:

Replace the power supply now Tivo is working. :)
