Basic TiVo is avilable on some DVD TiVo's and gives you three days of guide data and the ability to schedule manual recordings. TiVo plus gives you 14 days of guide data, allows you to use season passes, wishlists, and online scheduling among other networking features. Basic is not available on the S3.

TiVo plus is same as the paid TiVo service that all the other standalones get, for the the Toshiba and Pioneed DVD combos that come with TiVo Basic.

Sure you can switch a TiVo Basic "unsubbed" Toshiba DVD combo to a Series 3, but the Series 3 will need be subbed as normal.

The Basic "subscription" status is tied to the original box, and cannot be trasnferred to any other DVR.

For the purposes of the Series 3 VIP program and an exsiting Toshiba or Pioneer TiVo, you can only transfer a Lifetime Plus from that box to the Series 3.
