View Full Version : Different Kind of Audio Prob - Advice?

Ok let me try to explain the issue I am having. Originally I thought this might be related to the 6.3 (i now have 6.3b) audio problem but now I don't think so. My HR10 is hooked to a receiver via the optical out and is also hooked up to another external amp for audio playback in a separate room via the RCA jacks. I have a program on and the audio on the receiver (via the optical cable) drops out constantly and for a very random period of time....could be 10 seconds could be a minute. The receiver indicates that basically there is no longer an audio stream. The audio via the rca jacks in the other room continues to play. There is no glitch in the video (I have had that problem too and know about that one). I have ruled out a bad optical cable...used a new one...ruled out the receiver (i think)...since it doesn't happen with any other component when i plug them into the same jack but switching the HR10 to a different optical input causes the same issue. It doesn't matter whether my kids are watching the Nickelodeon or I am watching a 5.1 audio Hd stream...recorded or live....same constant problem. I have switched to PCM audio..turned off digital recording...nothing

I guess what I am getting at...is it possible that the optical out on the HR10 can go bad or is it more likely that this actually related to a software issue? It's just weird that it is only on the optical side. Is there something else that someone out there thinks I should try?

I have an HR20 also but am not thrilled about giving up my owned HR10 for a new and so far not that great leased one.

Thanks for help on this one

Is the audio dropout repeatable on rewind like the classic 6.3a DD audio dropout is ? In other words, when you rewind back to before the audio dropped, does the audio then drop out again at the exact same spot?

It seems to me like it could be a bad optical output on the HR10, but that is just a guess. Make sure there is not a dust bunny hiding in there that stayed even when you swapped cables. Also, when experiencing a drop, is there any light coming out of the cable?

No the dropout is not repeatable. If I rewind the sound plays fine once the audio returns via the optical cable. Thought about those damn bunnies but no luck there. And I would think when i lose audio that I would lose the light stream but that always remains.

A weird problem for me to say the least.

About to give up and call it a bad unit....just don't want to give it up ;)

I have noticed this same problem... Mine is repeatable, so I'm guessing it's the 6.3a DD audio dropout...

Do you have access to another audio receiver with optical input to test it on, to make sure it's not the audio receiver?

I am interpretting this:
"since it doesn't happen with any other component when i plug them into the same jack but switching the HR10 to a different optical input causes the same issue. "

to mean:
since it doesn't happen with any other component when i plug the other component into the same jack on the receiver that the HR10 was bad in before. Switching the HR10 output to a different optical input on the receiver causes the same issue.

So I don't think it is a bad port on the reciever, but it might be some new incompatability between the HR10 and the receiver. What brand/model receiver do you have? Did you do a search for that info here?

Yes, if it is repeatable, then it is likely the 6.3a DD audio dropout issue, and is therefor by definition different than what the OP is seeing, err hearing, uh, not hearing. ;)
