Greetings, hope someone out there can help...

My problem... TiVo can not download programming guide (Last successful download was 12/4/06). Each time I try to connect to the TiVo service I get the following error, "Failed While Negotiating"

My Set-up: TiVo Series 2 DVR, TiVo brand wireless G adaptor (USB to the back of the TiVo), Linksys Wireless G Broadband router. I live in an apartment complex where the internet is just ported to each unit, i.e. I just plug an Ethernet cable into the wall then into the router, no modem needed.

...Here is the kicker, it had been working flawlessly for 4 months (bought the TiVo around July '06). I have not changed ANYTHING with my set-up, just got a message one day that the programming guide was running out and the TiVo could not connect to the TiVo service.

Here is where I m so far in debugging this...

My internet service provider says they have no blocks on any incoming or outgoing IP address or Ports (with the exception of port 80 for phone service, but that should not effect me as I am using the broadband).

I have tried power cycling EVERTHING multiple times.

My TiVo sees my wireless network and has an excellent signal, ~ 90% (I use WEP, with 64 bit encryption 10 Hex decimal, and a password which I have re-entered into the TiVo several times and also tried no encryption).

I have tried having the TiVo automatically get an IP, I have tried to specify my own static IP, and I have also let the DVR assign itself one... no dice

I have been bouncing back and fourth between TiVo Support, my ISP Support, and even Linksys Support... all to no avail, so I ask anyone out there, please help. TiVo is one of the few things I get to enjoy in life and I have been devastated that I am having these issues.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read, any advice or direction is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
-T

I have a similar problem. I have tivo since a few days and the installation went alright but I am having problems getting program updates. It keeps saying the signal strength is low whereas on my laptop I get good, very good or even excellent connections.

The problem might be that I am using wireless to connect to someone else's internet connection? But then why does it update in those few occassions? Should I move the tivo closer to where I have my laptop (or vice versa?), is it a matter of getting a longer cable for the wireless adapter? Or any other suggestions?

(and yes I am considering getting internet service installed on my own computer, but I prefer saving the money since it works fine right now as far as getting online on my laptop)

jmmeij,

Thanks for posting but it sounds like you just have a signal strength issue or a faulty TiVo Wireless adaptor, whereas I have my own network and always have an 'Excellent' signal (~90% signal strength), and get the "Failed while Negotiating" error message every time.

My suggestion to you would be to:

1. Get your own network... (I understand wanting to save money but being on someone else's network means there are a lot of variables about the configuration of that network that are out of your control, plus..... it's kinda stealing....)

2. Take your TiVo to a friends house and try it out on another network (this way you can figure out if the wireless adaptor is bad and then get a new one)

Again, thanks for posting and good luck.
