I have one HR20 in use and 3 more HR20's in the box ready to go, but before I open them up, I need to know: Is it possible to set the remotes to use separate codes for all 4? I keep them all in the same room to broadcast throughout the home to each TV, receiving IR from each room.
THe Directv guy on the phone said that it is possible to use the remotes in "AV1" and "AV2" and "DIRECTV" mode to talk to three different PVRs separately, but must use the fourth one in RF mode. Has anyone successfully done this? If there's a way to have FOUR use IR codes separately that would be far better because I have 4 units and I prefer to be able to talk to each one separately from anywhere in the house with my IR distribution system. Also, I use Harmony 890 programmable remotes which do not allow RF so I would be forced to use two remotes at the location using RF.

Since the HR20 isn't a TiVo you should ask this here.

FYI, the HR10s can set 9 different remote addresses.

To answer the question..
No.. the DirecTV series of boxes, only have two codes for IR.
DirecTV or AV1/AV2 (they share the same).
So via IR... two and only two.

I got off the phone finally with Directv and what I was doing wrong was assuming that the 00001, 00002, 00003, 00004 codes were remote ID codes to prevent crosstalk. Turns out they are merely device ID codes, and 00003 is the correct one to use with the HR20.
After getting that sorted out, I verified that it is possible to have three devices with separate discrete remote codes: DIRECTV, AV1, and AV2. It is possible to have the AV1 and AV2 separate - I tried it myself.
Thanks for the tip on DBSTALK.... I am a former TiVo user.

You can have up to 9 different DVR's programed on seperate codes you have to change it in the system. However, you have to also program the remotes the come with the units to the different codes and than if you want to control these units via IR in diff rooms than you need to buy additional remotes. In my case I have 3 HR20s and R10 all on seperate codes and I got the programmable remote so I only have 1 remote in each room that has the IR control. As with you I have my electronics in the basement and can watch each unit on a different channel on any tv in the house.

Something is wrong then...
Be double sure that it is doing what you think it is doing.
As when you are in the remote section of the HR20 (and the other receivers).
You only have 1 line item for AV1/AV2
Not Two... so when you have that set... the HR20 will listen for the code comeing from either one of thoses.
