(hope I didn't miss another thread for same, if so then mods please merge, thx!)
Flipped this on while gaming a bit and not really wanting to watch anything I'd have to pay attention for. Pretty much blatant rip off of American Idol, though with a different goal/prize at the end.
Perhaps Simon Cowell should send his "should be a cabaret singer" (or whatever his old insult was for those that seemed like they'd be singing in a theme park) rejects over to this show.
Anyway, as with all of these shows, I'm constantly amazed at the folks who are no where near what you'd expect by way of an idol or a broadway star for a certain role who show up for these things and audition.
Witness "Sunshine" from Grease... tonite. Nice voice, bubbly personality, but not for the lead role in a Broadway rendition of Grease. High school maybe, local drama club maybe, but Broadway?! No way. Not without losing a lot of weight before hand. Put her in a backup role along the way, sure. Just about any one you'd want (though I don't think she'd have been a good Rizzo either...), but not as the cute and perky goody two-shoes Sandy.
Anyway, it wasn't offensive enough not to watch, but I don't think I'll really care who wins it in the end as I'm just not gonna go crazy over who stars in a Broadway production I'm not likely to spend money on tickets for.

It was ok for me. I'm curious to see if it gets better when they actually go to Grease Academy.

My problem with the whole thing is the fact that they just had a revival of Grease on Broadway not all that long ago. They even had that Rosie O'Donnell dude playing Rizzo.

One of the things I found interesting about So You Think You Can Dance is that certain dancers knew from the outset that they were not likely to make it on the show, but turned up to do their thing and entertain the judges. They were happy just to have a chance to show off, and if the judges liked what they did, they were happy. Nigel (the producer) and the other choreographers could be amazingly gentle and supportive to these performers.
I'm sure others are doing it just to get the experience of going through an audition. You can't learn to cope with audition nerves unless you just go and audition for stuff and get used to the whole process.
I see the same advice in job interview books; they tell you not to get super-picky about the jobs you apply for, but to go and interview for the experience.

Question for those who watch AI and I am a casual fan at best, and rarely watch anything but the last couple of shoes. I am assume this is going to be edited in a simlar manner.
Are the audition shows edited to make sure we see the final 12s audition or are we going see people we have never have seen anything from before?

I watched because my wife wanted to. IT was OK, but I sure got tired of hearing the producer saying "You're the one that we want... to go to Grease Academy." I'm sure he will be tired of saying that by the ime it is all done.
I was also amazed at some of the people that they had on there. I half wondered if some were a setup from theTV show's production staff.
Plus, I started to wonder/realize that rather than some "risky scheme" that it is an ingenious way to get tons of publicity for the show when it does open, as well as get paid by the TV Show producers for conducting auditions, which would normally cost them money and eventually get some talented unknowns in their show that they can pay much less than they would have had too if they were hired any other way.

The first couple of AI seasons, I'd only watch the beginning, for the horrible people. :)
Now I don't even watch that.

Same here, I started watching, but the process of picking which Sandy and Danny to go to the next round was painful. And George's Nephew ( or distant cousin, I forget which) is also painful to watch. Will wait till the Live shows start up.

AI: the bad singing never gets old... on here, it felt like a ripoff, and it wasn't edited very well.
BUT, as much as I thought this show was lame, a couple of things did crack me up:
1. I'm sure this has been mentioned at some point: but EVERY judging show has to have a British guy.
2. "You aren't quite what we are looking for in Sandy." Read: You're black/fat/old/wierd
If there is one lock of 2007, it is this... The winner of this show, guy or girl, will NOT be black or fat. Put the house on that one.

I watched. I did like, however, that the judges are the ones who SHOULD be making this decision--the writer, producer and director.
I think there will be buzz when the show debuts on Broadway, but can it sustain?
Rosie on Broadway in Grease was more than 10 years ago (According to IMDB, 1994).
I went to see a production of Grease and was actually disappointed that it didn't follow the movie script. It was different with different songs, etc. I wonder if they are going to follow the original stage version or the big screen version?

It was okay...but I found myself wondering how they were going to cast the other roles. Will those be actual broadway stars. If so, that would suck for them having a couple of nobodies who won a reality tv show play the leads.

I thought it was kind of funny how they tried to tease. Like at this point anyone cares about any of these people.
You are..... commercial break.

I agree that this show seems to be an American Idol rip off. But, I will watch it, just like I watch American Idol and I will never vote. I just never do, except I voted for a Carrie Underwood the season she was on AI. It's something to fill up my TV time when there's nothing else to watch and unfortunately, there are times when I have nothing else to watch.

This is something I've been curious about. I saw the stage version first where there isn't that slow Oliva Newton-John song in the middle, and the finale is "All Shook Up" ("You're the One That I Want" was for the movie.)
They said this was casting for the stage version, so it's driving me crazy that the title it taken from a song that isn't even in the stage musical. (Or did that change with the revival?) A similar thing happenned back with "Clueless" the TV series (UPN show) - one episode revolved around their high school performing the stage musical "Grease," but the only 2 songs they performed were the ones that appeared in the Paramount film, but not the stage version.
It just completely destroyed my suspension of disbelief! :)

The one thing I noticed was that you got a lot more attention (good or bad) from the judges if you sang a song OTHER than a Grease song. :) Jeez, how many times can you listen to "Hopelessly" or "Greased Lightnin"????
I didn't mind this "open audition" show as much as AI's. On AI, you just have to sing. Here, you have to sing AND dance.

LOL! The Kiddo picked up on that the first time he heard about the auditions for this show. He said he wouldn't have even auditioned "cause that's just wrong!" Yeah son...sure you wouldn't. :) :)
Anyway, I hope the show does well. I enjoyed it but I have a feeling I'm going to get sick of Grease songs before it's over. We did both freak out at the host getting that one chick a second shot in front of the judges. No way that happens in real life.

A number of people either know they're bad or are intentionally trying to be bad because they think that they can become famous. Who do you think is more popular at the moment - William Hung or LaToya London? (If you have to ask who LaToya London is, that pretty much answers the question.)

I wouldn't be surprised if all of the other parts have been, or are in the process of being, cast. Of course, if this becomes a reasonably big hit, there will always be touring companies...
And why do I have this feeling that, somewhere between the announcement of the winners and the Broadway opening, one of the two winners will be dropped from the show (I would be very surprised if the rules didn't give the producer that option - after all, he's got $10 million invested)?

This show reminded me why I hate shows like this. I can't get past the made-up drama to actually give a crap about these people.
Total Dreck. SP Deleted.

I can't believe nobody has said anything about Billy Bush - I'm not a fan of Seacrest but I definetely appreciate him more after seeing Billy's antics.
I too will probably watch once the trials are over and they get down to the final 10 or so. This ep was not entertaining at all. So many negatives about the show...

Yes, this is standard audition advice. It's not a good plan to sing a song from the show you are auditioning for.

I watched the first hour.
The first two guys were great. The rest were from ok to yuck.
The host is horrid.

I read some magazines while my wife watched and I kind of paid a little attention. There were a few decent perfomances, but it was clear that people that sing well but are not professionals are not int eh same league as most pros, including pop singers. There is just something in the delivery that is lacking. Plus some of these people picked horrible songs, WTF were they thinking? One good thing about TiVo is you can see teh first 30 seconds of each performance and FF when tehy suck.

I was embarassed that I watched this. There were only about two people I thought could really sing and the two second chancers blew it big time. I'm not sure I can watch another week of this.

Toine and I stumbled on this last night as well.
The first 2 guys were the best, and that's not saying much.
I can't believe how many people got positive comments on their singing when most of them couldn't sing.
I agree that the 2nd chancers both sucked.
If this show airs all its episodes before being canceled, and they really pick the next people to star in the musical, they're going to have to do a lot of work to make them into Broadway theater caliber singers.

Me and my wife both said why the hell are we watching this. Yet we still watched.
I finally watched this last night. I thought it was funny to hear the short description they gave to each contestant. "Slacker" Danny, "Boy-Band" Danny, "Spiritual" Sandy, etc. I was confused by the spinning "S?" graphic superimposed above the last Sandy before seeing that each of the Dannys had a "D?" on their shirts at the end.
