I've always wondered how the "Press  to record" ads come up during a commercial for a show. Anyone know?

Broadcast flags. The flag triggers the thumbs for the show and then when you hit the thumb button then of course it takes you to the details of that show.

All those little bits of data you don't see on your screen. It's the same way closed captioning and rating blockers work. It's also the same way radio stations are now able to send the name of the song to your car radio so you can see what song is playing (if you have a car stereo with that capability). Pretty cool what technology can do now.

Well I get that, I guess I meant, does FOX for example pay TiVo for this functionality? Does TiVo market the networks to add a press thumbs up to record feature?
How does the marketing aspect work? (I used to think this was a directv thing, but it does it OTA and cable...)

From what I recall, TiVo offers the service to the networks. AKA TiVo says "Hey Fox - you can advertise your shows on TiVo!" and Fox goes "Awesome, here's some money. Let's do it!"
So far, I've only seen them on Fox.

I've seen them on NBC occasionally too. I LOVE this feature, and am disappointed that it's not used more. I'm always irritated when I see a trailer for a show I'd like to see and there is no TU icon on it.

Yep, a serious lack of them this year. Only saw it for one show and I forget which one now. Looks like the billboard ads were not considered all that intrusive by the advertisers themselves. ;)

I've only seen the "Press Thumbs Up" on commercials for "Til Death".

I have cox cable and have seen it on occas, i have no use for it but did click it once to see what it did. if i recall, it took me into tivo setup and asked if i want a season pass for that program (or maybe it took me in and just asked if i wanted to record the one showing, i don't remember). i've also seen it on commericals i believe (for products). and i believe i've seen it much more often in the middle of the night than during the day or evening hours.
