quick question.
i have a series 2 TIVO(1) set up in the living room, which is set up to my wireless network.
i am trying to determine if i can purchase another TIVO(2) and set it up in another room and have it hooked up wirelessly so that i can watch what the main TIVO (1) is recording on the secondary TIVO(2). please note that i am only interested in being able to transfer programs to the second TIVO(2).
do i need service on the second subscription service to TIVO(2) in order to do this, or can i just link the two boxes and use the second TIVO(2) just as transfer viewing TIVO?
any help is most appreciated.

You'll need a subscription for both as a S2 TiVo's MRV won't work without a sub. Sorry this wasn't better news.

Will MRV work between a subed S2 and a nonsubed S1? I would search for the answer but not sure what key words to use here.

No, S1 Tivos cannot do MRV.

Also, keep in mind, that the TiVo cannot transfer a show while it is recording. Only shows which have completed recording can be transferred. (In your question, it sounds to me like you want to start the transfer while the main TiVo is recording). Therefore, it is not practical to transfer long shows such as movies or sporting events if you want to watch on TiVo (2) before TiVo(1) has completed the recording.
Also note that transfer times vary from user to user. The higher quality recordings obviously take longer to transfer. I get the following transfer speeds (approx.)
Basic = 1.5x
Medium = 1.25x
High = 1x
Best = 0.75x

Just to clear this up:
Say Tivo1 is recording show ABC. In order to transfer ABC to Tivo2, Tivo1 must no longer be recording it. However say Tivo2 is recording DEF and Tivo1 is not recording anything (or GHI, whatever) you can Transfer ABC to Tivo2 even if it is busy recording DEF.
What jj probably should have said it that Tivo cannot transfer a show while recording that same show.

Just last night I was recording a show while transfering a previously recorded show wirelessly to PC and all the while streaming music via Tivo from my PC. I love these toys! :D
I've been considering dropping my local channels from my DBS sub and just using the 540 with an OTA antenna and then view any local programs on the S2DT through it. But then these are both S2 boxes.
Might I suggest a possible FAB S2 unit to replace the S1?
