10 miniutes is a bit long for a card to be recognized but not out of the question. You need to put one in at a time and do nothing until the MMI screen appears. Then write down the pairing info. Then do the other one. Then call in the info and have them "hit" the cards. Or if you want to be real retentive about it follow the TiVo instructions to the letter and call each one in individually. If you can never get one to pop up the MMI screen on its own it is probably defective (not uncommon).

Are you implying that if the MMC screen doesn't "pop up" you shouldn't go to the tivo menu in setup and go to the cablecard setup manually? If the MMC screen doesn't pop up does the tivo need to be returned? I ask questions because last week, mediacom came to install my cards and we couldn't get them working. They are coming tomorrow for one more shot so any help would be appreciated. If we get the 161-4 error, how do we get beyond it to test channels? This was the problem last time.

Dude, the 161-4 error is no error. Ignore it, it means nothing. Matter of fact it's good when you get that.

If the MMC screen doesn't pop up does the tivo need to be returned? No, you go to the CableCard Decoders menu first and insert the first (bottom) CableCard. Then don't do anything and don't let the installer play with the remote. If the black MMI screen never appears then most likely you have a defective CableCard (not uncommon). In my case the MMI screen popped up in < 2 minutes. Problems happen when the installer puts both cars in simultaneously or tries to speed things along somehow by flipping through the menus prior to card recognition. And, as hookbill says, just clear any 161-4 errors (they're benign).
