I had heard somewhere that the 1 yr manufacturer warranty is doubled if you purchase with an Amex card. Is this true?

It is only a 90 day warrenty and yes it would be doubled to 180 if purchased with an Amex card.

Some Platinum Mastercards will double the warranty also.

Isn't TiVo's warranty 90-days parts+labor, 1 year parts? So an Amex purchase would push that out to 180-days and 2 years respectively.

Would be nice if they changed it to at least 1 year P&L. It's nice Microsoft did it with their XBOX360, even retroactively.

Especially on such a new device.

They were forced to due to widespread quality issues. Otherwise they would have had to deal with a class-action lawsuit. Trust me, that was not out of kindness. That was to save face and money. But kudos though for not making the end-users wait for the lawsuit and appeal. In the end though, it was a PR move. Better to fix the units than have their hardware reputation tarnished. They had managed to recover the reputation with the Xbox products and didn't want to ruin it before the Zune launch.

That's just my take.

If you purchase from Costco.com the warranty is "forever." You can return or exchange the unit anytime and for any reason... or no reason. This offers a kind of back door price protection as well, assuming you can get TiVo to change your account to a different box.

The Amex cover does not increase the manufacturers commitments. With Amex the extension is honored by them reimbursing you for the cots of the repair if it occurs during the extended period.

Note : It does not double extended warranties.

I buy almost everything with Amex because of this.

That's the best deal going. I've got a question. Can anyone buy from Costco or is it membership still?

I don't have any regrets about paying more for my S3 but had I known about Costco I would have gone there. I got mine from Circuit City with a 3 year extended warranty, including replacement for 60 bucks.

You must be a member, I'm afraid. I think I pay $40/year, but there are other requirements (which are probably spelled out on their web site). I remember that I was able to join because I could prove I worked at Apple Computer, for example. They may not be as picky any longer...

Costco is open to anyone willing to cough up the annual fee, now. They're no longer an "affinity" club, just a warehouse club.

And non-members can purchase items on costco.com, but there is an upcharge of (I think) 5%. But I don't know whether non-members get the same return privileges as members at local warehouses.
