I have a Philips DSR 704 Series 2 Direct Tivo. A few weeks ago it refused to reboot probably because of one of the hard drives failed. I acquired a copy of InstantCake with the file name “instantcake-tcd540-std.iso” Is there a way to tell if a certain version of InstantCake will format a hard drive to work on any particular Direct Tivo?

Unfortunately the TCD540 is a standalone Tivo model, so It will not work on your Directivo. In general, any Series 2 Directivo image (except that of the R10) should work with your unit.

If you check the PtvUpgrade website you should be able to specify the make and model of your Tivo to acquire the correct InstantCake image. This will require that you actually spend the $20 to download the image and not "acquire" it through peer-to-peer networks for free. ;)
