I am getting ready to replace my HD in a Hughes DTivo and will purchase the DB35. There are two drives that cost the same: ATA100 or the SATA300. Which one is the correct one or will they both work.

thanks

ATA or PATA; Is what is the native interface in your DTivo

You can go SATA, however, you would need the appropriate cable converters.

I don't think there's room for a converter. You should buy the PATA (ATA or IDE) drive. There's no benefit to buying the SATA drive and you'd just have to spend extra for a converter.

Thanks for the immediate response. Here is the part info on the drive:

MFG#: ST3160212ACE
HDD 160GB 7200RPM ATA100 2MB DB35 90 DAY SED DOA;
5 YR MFG THIS IS CE DRIVE

MFG#: ST3160212SCE
HDD 160GB 7200RMP SATA300 2MB DB35 90 DAY SED DOA;

I will go ahead and purchase the ATA100 drive then. Thanks again and hope to have it soon so I can zipper it!

Right. You want the first one (ATA100).

I'm getting a 250 GB DB35 for about $80 (if they'll ever ship it to me)
The last three letters in the part number ACE or SCE: A for ATA (PATA) and S for SATA.

I've got Cake and PTVNet ready to go whenever it shows up.

There are cable converters to use Sata in ide and the reverse? I have an old external drive i wanted to use in my desktop pc but the external is ide and the desktop is sata. Can you link me to the cable converters

There certainly are such converters. But an "IDE external drive"? I assume you mean the actual drive is IDE, not the external enclosure's connection to the PC (which is usually USB or Firewire.) Here's one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812156010)

I don't see why not, especially if they come out with a PATA version. If not, you'll need an adapter.

I screwed up and bought two SATA drives, but found this converter that seems to work and fits just fine...

All Series 1 and 2 Directv/Tivo Models and all Series 1 and 2 Tivo models use the ATA or PATA Hard Drives. These use the 100/133 based IDE.

The only model that uses the SATA Drives are the Series 3 Tivo units. These are 150/300 based depending on SATA1 or SATA2.

Of course, you could use a ATA to SATA converter, but your Speed would drop. IDE based systems do not support 150 or 300 MB/s transfer speeds.

I have a series 2 DSR708 and which had an 80gb IDE in it. I'm trying to put in a 250 Gb Seagate ATA drive. I have it all "zipped" and should work, however it sticks on the "welcome/loading" screen.

I'm guessing I can't use that ATA drive??

If you are able to plug in the drive to your units without an adapter, you've got the correct ATA type drive (Now also known as a PATA drive)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_Attachment

Since you say it's an 80GB drive, it almost certainly isn't a new drive and I can be fairly certain that it's also a IDE/ATA/PATA drive.

Check your jumpers on the drive. Seek out help in the upgrades section. :)

The "zippering" of the 250GB drive may have gone wrong.

Agreed. Reload a drive with just the TiVo OS and try it. If it works, then "Zipper" it and try it again. :)
