All terms and conditions for a 1-year prepaid subscription apply to your old DVR. At the end of 1-year, you will be automatically rolled to then-applicable monthly rate. The 1-year contract is not transferable to another party.

So, if it falls under the conditions of 1 year prepaid sub, does that mean it operates as a standalone unit and doesn't have to be in the same location llike a MSD unit does?

Can I leave it under my name and give it to my mother to use in another state?

It would be great for a gift (even though the device is used), and maybe hook future TiVo customers.

I would say you could. The non transferable part means that you can not have her add the Tivo into her account. Since the Tivo acts like a prepaid plan those have no terms in being in the same household so that goes out the window.

I think it is a great way for her to try out Tivo and see what she thinks. I would recommend after the year though (given plans are like the current ones) look into getting a brand new box and extending her service, maybe doing three years prepaid. If you don't do that you will be billed monthly at the one year rate, which is currently at $19.95 and the only way to lower that is to sign up for a commitment. With the current pricing if you are signing up for a commitment you might as well get a free box (single tuner) or a greatly reduced dual tuner (69.99). Just in some way when it comes month 11.5 remind yourself to take a look at the current Tivo offerings and plan accordingly (only issue I can see is your mom not wanting to go through an upgrade is she has lots of shows on the Tivo currently or other reasons)

That is exactly what TiVo hopes you do :)
