I've searched the "black screen" problem and there is a little, but not a lot of information out there.
Put shortly, every few weeks the unit will show black screens with no audio on every channel. The guide works, the playback works, but the "record" counter doesn't show anything and there is no video or audio signal.
Other threads suggest that this was not fixable with a replacement harddrive.
So before I try to get a replacement, one of the D* reps told me to try a complete
"Reboot and Clear Drive" rather than the soft reboot I've been doing. He says it's been pretty successful in resolving the problem.
My question to any of you who have had the problem. Have you tried this and has it worked? My Tivo is almost empty right now so this is a great time for me to try this first.
