Multiswitch dead?

I recently did some remodeling and had to unplug all my cables from my multiswitch. When I went to plug it back into the outlet, I heard a pop, smelled a smell and then it wouldn't work. I'm figuring it's dead but just want to be sure and also find out why. I had it plugged in to the same outlet as before. I guess before I get another one I'd like to know if there are some that have a better reputation than others. This one was an RCA and I'd only had it a few months. How long are these expected to last? Does the fact that I didn't have the satellite cables plugged into it before I connected it to power have anything to do with why it died? TIAFYH.

Since this happened without the cables connected is a good thing. Probably prevented damage to the LNBs. Not having the cables connected wouldn't cause this.

However, before connecting a replacement switch, I'd verify that the LNBs still wok by connecting each line from the dish to a receiver.

Already done. The LNB's still work.
