I've read that in many cases it is not necessary to have a land line hooked to the TIVO receiver for updating. Most of the postings that I've seen are for units different from mine, so I'm just checking. Has anyone tried unhooking the HDVR2? I have voip and I would rather not have to jump through the various hoops that I've seen people leap through to get these things to update. It is beyond me why Tivo and Directv won't do something more to rectify this situation. The technology certainly exists to make this a cost effective and easy solution for everyone. They are now kind enough to offer a DVR that does not need a land line that we can lease for yet another $5 per month, but they require a $99 upfront fee. Any help would be appreciated.

Once you have successfully activated a DTiVo of any model, you can disconnect the phone line without problems. The only effects are that you won't get software updates installed and you'll get a daily nag message after a month.

TiVo did do something - they added the capability for the TiVo to communicate over the Internet. DirecTV refused to turn that on. Everything is there in the software, just disabled.
