I have a 40 hour series 2 TIVO unit and would like to create more space by recording some items to a DVD. Any suggestions for a good basic DVDR unit to hook up to the TIVO box? Does recording to a DVD work the same as recording to a VCR?

Yes, it works exactly the same. Most any DVDR will work, some are better quality than others. The Panasonics get a lot of good mentions here.

You should also consider DVDRs that have a hard drive. These allow some editing before burning to disk.

You may also want to consider getting a Tivo unit with built in burner. I have several Humax refurbished units and they work great.

I think you have more flexibilty by using separate units.

There have been other threads like this recently.
check out avsforum.com's DVD Recorder section for more info.
as JimSpence said, you want a DVD recorder with a hard drive even though you think you don't... (unless you REALLY want _full_ recordings, with pre and post- padding, or really want to 'babysit' the recording and do the pause/FF/unpause trick, which will create really cruddy recordings).

I agree with your statement regarding flexibility. I have a Humax drt-800 Tivo with built in burner and a stand alone DVD Recorder. The tivo with built in burner is so easy to use I no longer use the stand alone recorder. I do not do any kind of video editing or try to copy protected material so I do not need the flexibility of a stand alone unit. If ease of use is important then a Tivo with burner is the way 2 go. If flexibility is important than buy a stand alone.
