Hello,
I'm a 43 year old newbe. What brought me hear was the idea that I may be able to hack my tivo to do 2 things.
1) skip commercials during recordings. Is this possible?
2) Connect to my wireless network using the tivo wireless G USB network adapter.

After buying the network adapter and attempting to set it up, I found "in short" that my directv tivo won't update to the proper software version needed to use the adapter! is there a way around this?

Thanks in advance

Networking is not supported by DirecTV TiVos. Hobbyists have found a way to enable a lot of network functionality, but it requires opening the TiVo box and making modifications to the software. Also, if your TiVo box is the R10, hardware changes are needed too. Once yoi do this, you are responsible for maintaining it and there is no support from DirecTV or TiVo for the changes.

There is no provision to automatically skip ads during recordings.

You can hack a series 2 DirecTivo (USB ports on the back) to enable Multiroom Viewing (MRV) and networking over a wired or wireless network using the Zipper - which is discussed here Zipper (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929)

Note the Tivo 802.11g wireless adapter isn't supported by the Zipper. However you can attach an 802.11g wireless ethernet bridge to a Zippered DirecTivo to achieve the same thing.

The R10 requires hardware changes before you can Zipper it - how good are your soldering skills?

The other series 2 DirecTivo's don't require soldering - you may want to consider buying a factory refurbished model on ebay.com for $50-$70 to Zipper. The Zipper compatable DirecTivo models are listed at the top right corner of this page Zipper (http://www.mastersav.com/tivo_zipper.html)

Thanks, Buying a reman seems to be the best option, That way my original doesn't get destroyed LOL. and yes I can solder and have the equiptment to do so. but I would like to keep one functioning and one to hack.
From what I have read so far, I will need Unix OS on a computer to do the tivo drive editing, correct?

It's not just soldering, you need to be able to handle surface-mount component soldering and desoldering. There are people who offer a service of modifying the R10, but I agree that buying a different model for "hacking" is best.

When you do these modifications, you boot from a special CD that has all the necessary software on it - your regular OS does not run and is not modified.

I have done many projects requiring Component install/removal. So we are good to go in that area. I have 3 PC's, 1 MAC, 2 Laptops, and 2 Pocket PC's, 2 card programers and wireless G router. Plus Boxes and boxes of spare parts, boards, hard drives and loose components. Thats just scratching the surface. My main computer was built from scratch, Water cooled, 5 hard drives, cd rom, DVD and a cdrw, using 2 monitors. "Yea the Wife thinks I'm nuts LOL"

Thanks for clearing the OS part up. Now to obtain a rehabed Tivo, and to burn a disk or 2 or 3... and to do ALOT of reading!

Ok. The best resource on doing the PROM mod for an R10 is found in a forum which I can't link to directly here, but a Google search on 'R10 PROM mod' (no quotes) will find it. If you have any DTiVo but an R10, then no PROM mod is required.
