View Full Version : Guest account cannot play .tivo files

I just tried to play a .tivo file on my PC signed on to the Guest account and using Windows Media Player 11. The file plays fine on a named user account, but produces an error message when trying to play on the Guest account. The .tivo file is located in a shared folder (confirmed by the fact that I can see and select it to play).

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Pretty sure you have to reinstall TivoDesktop for each account you want to run it under.

Could also try exporting this registry key from working user account creating a .reg file.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TiVo]

The reimport it (by double clicking on .reg file) while logged into other account. Never actually tried that though.

Just tried the registry trick. Didn't work. :(

Ended up having to reinstall TivoDesktop as other user. (Wasn't enough to just run repair. Had to uninstall and reinstall.) Maybe because I did the registry thing I had to then manually enter my MAK, it didn't prompt during the install.

Luckily, it didn't break the other account.

There has to be an easier method. Somebody posted some steps the other day to enable/disabled Tivo Beacon + Server on the fly. Wonder if that could could be used here...

Greg, thanks. I tried to install TiVo Desktop for the Guest account, but can't since the account doesn't have administrator rights. I have admin rights under my named account but the Desktop install doesn't give you the option to enable for all users like other programs... I'm not sure if it's possible to grant admin permissions to the Guest account, but I guess I'll try that and install again.

Thanks for the reply, I'll let you know what happens.

Yeah, I was testing with just another administrator account. Can you try right clicking on the install .exe and doing a Run As when installing it?
