Hi. I am a little confused about what Directv is and isn't allowing you to do. I have a series 1 Tivo, that I just increased the hard disk space on - so I will probably will be ok with that, but I wouldn't mind having a second series 2 one as insurance if the one ever goes out.

As an existing directivo customer, will they allow me to add a second unit, if I can obtain one?

My other option is I just wait and pray I can still find one if my current one ever goes out, and hope that they will allow me to replace it with a different one when the time comes. I don't want to go to their receiver - don't want to give up tivo, but also don't want to not be able to record two programs at once.

I looked at two walmarts around here - but no luck. I was hopeful because I live in Missouri (St. Louis) and had read that was where some were, at least a few months ago but so far no luck) Could drive to a couple of others in the area, but it's probably a wild goose chase at this point. If I happen to find one though I'm going to probably buy it. Should have upgraded to series two when I could, but now I'm afraid I'm too late.

As an existing directivo customer, will they allow me to add a second unit, if I can obtain one? There are people here with 2, 3, up to 6 DirecTivos on one account. You can as as many as you can afford. Depending on your current setup, additional equipment may be required.

A new one is hard to find these days... but ebay, craigslist, etc. have used/refurb as well as http://www.weaknees.com

Check out this topic: Where do I get a DirecTivo? (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=316297). Any Series 2 model (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4354807&&#post4354807) will do. If you want to enhance it with network features (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929) then avoid the R10 model.

As for activation: If you have an existing receiver that you can move to card from, you're all set. Depending on what CSR you get, you may or may not be able to activate using the card that came with the DTivo - if they ask you to get a card it will be $20.

I had to do just this over the weekend, my 5yr old DSR6k power supply packed up after we had some brown outs during the storms last Friday. I bought a DSR7k from a mate who was moving back to the UK about 6months ago as my backup unit. Rang up on Sat and DTV CSR allowed me to move the card from the 6k to the 7k no problems, as the card was not damaged and everything worked fine after guided setup.

Now I just need to upgrade this box and put it on a UPS!!

If you do manage to find a new one they may try and make you sign up for another 2yrs. A friend had that problem and in the end dumped DTV for FiOS - with the bug ridden Moto box for the DVR (do Moto and others not test these things before they hit the field ?).
