I generally consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to the business of television. I worked in TV for a long time and I'm pretty well read. Still, I don't understand the following:

Why order a full season of a new show, then burn them off at a two-per-week pace instead of spacing them out?

I'm talking about My Boys on TBS. The season finale is already here and it seems like the "season" started just a few weeks ago.

Why did TBS do it that way?

I believe that they did it the way they did to try to maximize ratings.

By offering most of the episodes at a time when most broadcast networks were offering few new programs, they made it easier for viewers to find and watch My Boys...

If they can convince advertisers that ratings will be higher, they can then charge more money for ads during those two consective hours than if the hours were a week apart.

I admire the cable outlets that produce new programming and then follow an unconventional 'season'. It really makes for a better variety of shows throughout the year. It's not too disconcerting for people with TiVo who are accustomed to not watching shows when everyone else does. That probably plays into their thought process.

I miss Starved, which debuted with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but wasn't renewed. Significant Others was another short-run series that had one good year, never to be heard from again. I guess one mini-season of a clever show that would never make it on a network is better than never having such stuff to watch at all.

   to cable channels doing original programming and taking some chances!

Actually, there were two, six episode, seasons of Significant Others. A truly hilarious show in my opinion.
