When I get the new D* HD DVR and deactivate the HD Tivo, what usability will it retain? 1) Will all recorded programs remain viewable? Will there be an activation nag screen if they are viewable? 2) Can OTA recording still be done?

1 yes + yes (not activation, daily call reminder)
2 don't know

2) No. Unless the TiVo can see a satellite signal and receive authorization for DVR service, no recording. All you have is the live buffer.

Why deactivate the HDTiVo? Four tuners are better than two. :)

I'd agree - for $5/mo, keeping it active is worthwhile.

You could always remove the hard drive from the unit. That would be worth the TiVo in itself.

Have you checked the going price lately on eBay for the HR10-250?
Supply (very limited) and Demand (still high) means high prices
