I bought an R10 at a Walmart and it won't make the test call. My Q is how
do I get this unit fixed, if I get a replacement from DTV they might send me a DTV plus and we don't want that.
THANKS

What's it doing/not doing that leads you to believe the modem isn't working?

Do you have regular old telephone line, not VOIP?

It's plug into a land line, the line gets dial tone.

What are the exact error messages you see when trying to make a Test Call?

Do you have DSL? If so, is there a DSL filter on the line for the R20?

It's just a phone line, and line works, after you put in zip code it goes to make
test call, call failed comes up,

It's just a phone line, and line works
Have you tried a different line from the wall to the unit?

The connector on either end could have a bad internal fitting, or there could be a break in the wire that you can't see

Unpluged phone line to unit and put phone on it and made a call.
So that's not it.

I just installed an R-10 after the HDVR2 tuner 2 died. I had the same problem. I have dsl (fast access bell south Internet) and forgot to put a line filter on the line.
I did make it dial in without a filter by changing the dial mode from tone to pulse. It finally dialed in. And in a couple of days, DUH, I remembered it did not have a DSL filter on the line. You might try making sure had the correct area code. Also don't use a splitter. Pick up another phone in the house and see where it's calling. And when all else fails take it to someone elses house for the initial download.(incase there are wiring issues) had a devil of a time geting my new R-10 downloaded But it did finally! :) GOOD LUCK! :)
