View Full Version : So delays in channel changing are normal correct?

I read the TiVo forum FAQ and was informed that with DirecTV + TiVo = 6 second delays in channel changing.
I hate this fact. Though I know there is nothing I can do about it.
My receiver is DirecTV D10-100.
I think the thing I hate most is the fact that I change the channel on the TiVo remote and then after TiVo decides to switch DirecTV must punch in the numbers. Even if I hit channel up numbers must be entered.
I guess I just have to get used to it.

It is normal to have a delay in changing channels. The Tivo enters number each time you change the channel because it is unsure if it is on channel say 125 changing to 126, so it just hits 1-2-6. The channel can be changed from improperly receiving codes to using the STB remote.
There is one solution to the delay in changing channels, don't watch live tv. I know that might sound like a smart answer but after some time you will learn that watching live tv is inconvenient and an inefficient use of time. Setup some season passes of some of the shows you like and then soon you will get in the flow of watching recorded shows or even shows that started say 20 min ago and so you can zip through commercials and catch up to live time right at the very end.

another solution, filed under "making do", is to have a third and/or fourth tuner, in addition to your dual S3 tuners. Then, after having set up or tuned-in the 3 or 4 channels you are most likely to be skimming back and forth to, use your receiver/processor remote to key in your already pre-tuned channels via it's allotment of buttons (dvdr, vcr, tv, etc., or whichever buttons you are able to assign for your 3 or 4 tuners).
Your channel skimming will be instantaneous! Well, at least among those 4 channels, anyway. Beyond that, you're still screwed. :p

Thanks for the replies. Just making sure that the delays were perfectly normal. I think once I get up and going with recordings it'll be better. Honestly, I don't watch a lot of TV just whatever tickles my fancy.

To the OP, that's the downside of using any IR blaster setup between TiVo and a set top box (like DirecTV receiver or cable box). You're much better off w/DirecTiVo as the delay will be a lot shorter, you won't have the entry of the #s after pressing channel up/down, have dual tuners and no picture and sound quality loss when recording.
BTW, the chances are you won't bother watching live TV much once you get used to your TiVo. I sure don't.
If you're new to TiVo and within 30 days, maybe you can return it, cancel and then look around for a used or cheap DirecTivo? The monthly for DirecTivo is only $6/mo.
