View Full Version : IR problem with cable box
Just got my 1st TiVo! Problem is the IR Blaster is shooting the channels twice to my Zenith Cable box...Example, if I want channel 101 the cable box receives 110011 instead. Tried with A,B, and C speeds with no success. Also tried moving the IR blaster, ans removing one IR blaster, no success either. Any ideas?

That's kind of weird. Is this a new or a used box? Some older boxes have a "big eye" IR blaster on the front of the tivo, as well as the usual small IR blasters that plug in the back.

I have heard some people have problems with reflections with remotes. Never heard of it with blasters, but I suppose with a glass case... Anyhow, to test for this, temporarily put a cloth tent around the IR reciever on the zenith and the IR blaster. If the problem goes away, you have a reflection problem.
I'll try the IR tent, but also wanted to note that I had a simillar issue when configuring my Harmony universal remote with the same cable box (Only with the channel up/down, it skipped two channels instead of one) and I was able to correct it by changing the speed to 200ms. Is there anyway to do this on the TiVo?

Ugh. Sounds like a box issue then. I note problems written up on the AVSforums site with remotes and zenith boxes.
Ok. Does this zenith box have a serial connector on the back? If so, you should be using that.
What is the model number of the zenith box?
Justin, thanks for you help so far! The cable box is model# DET-MMDS2-ZEC2..but,
I agree and I believe this is an issue with the cable box, and after checking way over 100 diferent IR codes and asking TiVo customer service if changing the IR speed was possible, I'm about to give-up and return the TiVo and get my subription payment back while I still can.

Doesn't really matter whose fault it is. There is a 30 day return, so you are covered.
So does the Zenith have a serial connector on the back? I didn't see any online manuals for it.
Does your cableco provide alternate Set top boxes? Many allow you to exchange them. I would exchange the cableco box before booting out the Tivo. Really, you'll regret it if you don't go the extra mile.
Nope, no serial port on the box. I just e-mailed some one I know at the cable co. and asked if they have any alternate box. Well... Let see what he says.
