View Full Version : Any benefit doing a routine reset/restart?

My S3 has been on since day one 9/14/06 or so and only restarted twice due to the two updates so far and appears to run fine. I am one of the lucky ones (knock wood) without any major issues.

So I was wondering, like a computer, if I were to reset or restart on a occasional basis, would that clear memory allowing for faster menus and the like? Or I am just asking for trouble, by breaking the rule "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

I noticed immediately after the last update the guide data cycled at a faster pace and now seems to have slowed down to the original snails pace prior to the update. Although that could be perception.

I know that eventually we'll get a software update that will include the speeded up guides/menus that the S2 now enjoys and I am patiently waiting for that.

This thread is more out of curiosity than necessecity.

You might get unlucky and get stuck in the endless reboot cycle. That would be bad.

I have wondered the same thing as the OP and with my old D-TiVo I believe I would do this based on what I know about PC's. Austin Martin has a point about a bit of a risk on this as some people have expressed. I wouldn't worry about that so much however because I haven't had that problem but as far as whether or not it is needed or helpful I am doubtful. As I understand it TiVo is Linux based system and I do not pretend to know anything about Linux. Windows on the other hand I do understand a bit and can totally understand why it should not only be rebooted but cleaned up as well i.e. using a Utility cleaner and defragmentiation. Since TiVo offers us no such programs I don't really think it would be helpful.

You're using the wrong OS if you have to restart your computer to get "faster menus and the like".
