View Full Version : S3 Endless Reboot Fixed!

I spent all night watching my S3 reboot and called tech support this morning. My HD TIVO is now working again and here's what I did:

1. Unplug TIVO, remove both cable cards
2. Replug TIVO and repeat guided setup (without cards)
3. Put in Card 1 and let it acquire channels for an hour
4. Put in Card 2 and let it acquire channels for an hour
5. Repeat guided setup

After that I checked my system settings and noticed that TIVO service finally was switched over to "lifetime" via my VIP transfer from my old S2. However, I also noticed that the name of my old S2 was showing as my HD Tivo's name. I got on Tivo's site to rename it correctly, and noticed that when TIVO transferred my lifetime service, they did not switch the TIVOs correctly and my S3 was optioned as allowing transfers between TIVOs, while my S2 was showing that option was not available.

So I called TIVO back and got the assignments straightened out. It is possible that the S3 being temporarily set to allow transfers to/from other TIVOs caused it to continuously reboot.

Or it is possible that the other procedure worked of removing and reinserting cable cards.

I have my TIVO connected to a Sony Bravia via HDMI cable. My Sony has a cable card slot too and I just rotate the cards through the TV when I think there is something wrong with them.

So far, I've not had to get new cable cards installed.

Good luck to all with this wacky problem. Started this new thread because the other was veering off topic.

Happy holidays.

The problem on the Tivo website is that they switched the names of your Tivos. Your old one had the new Tivo name (so it showed that transfers were allowed), and vice versa.

Yes. They applied the old S2 name, service number and activation date to the new S3 and I had to manually change the names back and exempt it from doing inter-TIVO (intra?) transfers on the S3. After calling TIVo, they got it to recognize that the S3 was not set up for transfers.

I'm glad they're finally giving updated information from their end. Previously they called this a cablecard issue or a hardware issue.

It has nothing to do with tivo changing names, or allowing transfers. Sometimes when the machine reboots, it must catch the cablecards in a bad state, or something on the hard drive having to do with the cable cards.

There are many threads on this issue if you search the forum. Glad to say that the people here figured out how to fix this a week before Tivo did....

Well tech support did not exactly come up with that fix actually. They tried to get me to do the usual hoop-jumping that did not apply. In any event, this fix worked for me. When I searched threads here last night I did not find this particular fix, so I am just offering it up as, at least for now, one that's working for me.

Does it do anything for random reboots?

I now have random reboots occuring 2-3 times a day. Occurs when watching recorded content or live. Doubt its "toxic" channel issue, at least with recorded content anyway... after a reboot the same content played back does not cause a second reboot. But I do have reboots occuring quite frequently. Sometimes 2-3 a day, other times none.

Swapped the cablecards. No fix. Tried the above steps... no fix.

Wangooroo - try leaving Suggestions off to see whether, perhaps, a channel you don't often watch, and that is being recorded as aSuggestion, happens to be toxic and you just don't know about it!
