View Full Version : how do I trick my HR10 into getting both OTA HD NBC stations?(Ch. 2 and Ch. 4)

With my vintage(circa 1975) rooftop OTA antenna and my LCD TV's built-in OTA
HDTV tuner, I can get my local NBC HD station(Ch. 2) 9 miles away, as well as
the NBC HD station(ch. 4) in a nearby city appx 35 miles away. (same situation
with the two CBS and two ABC HD stations)
However, my HR10 will only tune into the local NBC Ch. 2 , not the other NBC
station, Ch. 4... I tried running setup with a different zip code, but that didn't
work...
Any advice appreciated! :)
You have to add the second city under Message & Settings/Settings/Satellite & Off-Air Antenna. Choose Repeat Guided Setup and specify a second ZIP code for the second city.
I can't tell you the exact steps because I don't want to go through the guided setup again. But it's in there. I can get HD from both San Diego and LA and I have a LA ZIP code entered for the second city. I get guide data for both.

I would then ask: Why?
I could see doing it if the more distant station was across a timezone border. Thus giving you more options for conflict resolution.
Or is there just more compelling local programming "over yonder"?

Well, around here, having the Greensboro and Raleigh stations is helpful during basketball season as different affiliates in each town carry the regional Raycom broadcasts, so when the CBS station in Raleigh pre-empts something, you can catch it from the Greensboro CBS affiliate if you want. Not sure where the OP is but I imagine that similar sports issues can come up elsewhere.

Can't you just click it in channels that you receive?

If you couldn't get Channel 4 after changing the zip code, it may well be that the tuner is just not going to get it with your current setup. The tuner in the HR10 is known for it's weak tuning ability. I have the same situation, if I aim my antenna for Cincy (10 mi) stations to come in without dropouts, I cannot get Dayton (30 mi) on the HR10, but the same feed to my Sony TV gives me all the Dayton stations.
If you go to antennaweb and get the frequencies, you can check the signal strength without going through guided setup.

My "why" goes back to July 2001 when I got an HDTV and CBS was the only station in San Diego broadcasting in HD. I was going to need a rotator anyway, since San Diego locals broadcast from 3 different mountains and from my location, that spread was 77 degrees. I put an antenna in the attic on a rotator and pointed it towards Mt. Wilson, 103 miles away and 6,000 ft high and found that I could get ABC, NBC, PBS and other independent stations, in HD, from LA.
Remember that this was before cable HD and sat HD and HD DVRs. Even though we had two DirecTiVos recording everything in SD, we watched live when we could because the picture quality was so compelling. I did the rotator thing then because I had to.
Later on, all of the stations in San Diego eventually went to HD, so the need for the rotator diminished. Of course with a DVR, needing to use a rotator to bring in all of the channels you want is problematic. We get ABC and CBS HD OTA and NBC HD off the sat because the local NBC affiliate is owned & operated. I can get Fox in HD, but reception varies because it is the farthest away, actually in Mexico. I can't get local NBC and I've lost PBS and CW. I bought an HR20 a couple of months ago, so now I get the Big 4 locals in HD and I'll be able to record 24 in HD.
Can't you just click it in channels that you receive?
You won't get any guide data for those stations if the HR10 doesn't know you want to receive those stations. And I think it only populates the "Channels I Receive" with stations that are available in the ZIP code that you put in, so if you don't enter a second ZIP code, the HR10 will only look for stations available in the first ZIP code.

Leila, are you doing the secondary market thing? Put your market into the primary then after that is done go to the secondary market options and put in the other city. THEN do a scan and see if they come up.
Switching from one market to the other will probably negate one set of network affiliates.
Oh, and don't pay attention to those asking why....I live between markets and there are a lot of reasons to get them both...from different sports to different news to different syndicated programs and also when problems occur. (Example: 2 in Baltimore has Jeopardy in HD; 7 does not. MyNetwork in Baltimore does not do HD but MyNetwork in DC does...)

I was wondering about this issue, but never saw it mentioned.
I live in Coral Springs Florida. The Miami NBC affiliate is on 6.1, the West Palm NBC affiliate is 5.1. I tried the secondary market thing, no joy. I have the guide data for both. Tivo shows plenty of signal for 5.1 (basically the same as 6.1), but when I try to watch 5.1, Tivo says "Searching for signal".
Ideas?

Are these stations in the same direction, or do you use a rotor to point toward each affiliate station separately? If one is North and the other is south (or make any two different directions) you would have to run your set up with the antenna pointing in said direction. Do not clear scanned channels, just add the channels in that new direction. If my hunch was right you might try antenna web or similar resource to tell you where to point the rooftop OTA antenna

I think this is only for the guide. This tells the HR10 to read the satellite guide for both the first market and the second market. If you skip this, you won't have DTV beam down a description of what is on at a given time and wish list keywords, but it will not prevent you from receiving the channel. I could be wrong but I have been able to pull in two separate markets using a 40 foot tower antennae and a rotor to point toward each city without programming the guide for the farther city.

Leila, TonyD79 has it exactly right.
I had to do the same thing. I'm between Washington and Baltimore with Washington as my DMA. But Washington only Shows the lame redskins. So I added Baltimore to my secondary market so I can watch a winning team, the Ravens!
And like Tony said...the sports packages are different, the news is different, and the HD quality is different. It comes down to more options.
Under settings just add your secondary market.
